Narcolepsy

Have you ever seen people that fall asleep out of nowhere? Well there is a name for this kind of thing. It is called  NARCOLEPSY! Narcolepsy can be defined as a chronic sleep disorder that involves an excessive feeling of sleepiness during any time of the day. Poeple with this suffer from extreme and fatigue and can fall asleep anytime and anywhere; it is unpredictable. We watched a video about this man that suffered from narcolepsy. We could see that he would fall asleep in the middle of the city. He would just collapse and sleep. This man could not be left alone because he was in danger. In his house, he would wear a protective helmet so he wouldn't wound his head. It was funny to watch this man talk to the camera and then slept for a couple of seconds, then woke up and fell alseep again. Unfortunately, this disease is nothing to laugh about. Living with this disorder is completely life changing. People wo suffer this cannot get a driver's permit ;hence they could fall asleep while driving and cause and atrocious accident.  also, as stated before people with this cannot live on their own, for they face many fears in the streets. Narcolepsy has no cure, but can be treated. The cause for this is unknown.

Sleep and Dreams

As we all know, sleeping is one the most essential needs every human being has. We can spend without food or water, but not without sleep. There are many theories into why people sleep, and why we spend 1/3 of our lives on it. Scientists say that we need it to repair brain cells and neurons and also grow. Another theory to why is sleep is because in the state of sleep, our brain organizes ideas and It gets stored in our memory. This is why they say that it is good to study before we sleep. There is a theory that says we need sleep in order to rest our bodies, but this is false. Sleep is not needed to rest our bodies, just rest. Also, most of our time sleeping is spent dreaming, and many theories to why this happens have emerged. In many cases we have nightmares, where one of our loved ones dies like a parent, and it is believed that this happens to prepare ourselves for when it actually happens. Out of dreams many amazing things emerge, like ideas, inspirations, etc. Scientists have also concluded that dreaming can be done both sleeping and while being awake, just that while we are awake our dreaming is controlled hence we are conscious of things. In the end sleep and dreams will always be an essential part of our lives.

Sensory Deprivation

After watching the video on “Sensory Deprivation”, I though; who in the world invented such a thing?! At the beginning I believed that the participants would be able to go through the 48 hours without any problem. I even believed I could go through it without a problem. After the first few hours went by, you could observe how the participants where beginning to act in a really strange manner as if they were beginning to go insane. They began to pace from one end of the room to another just for time to go by. Another participant simply slept almost throughout the entire elapsed time. There was one participant that really impressed me. He used his sensory deprivation time to simply meditate. He made it seem as if it were really easy. After watching him I realized that the only way to go through sensory deprivation is to stay calm and have a positive attitude. This will aid into stimulating the brain how it is needed in order to survive. Sensory
Deprivation can surely be a working method when it comes to torture. It does not kill people, but it does kill their brain. It damages their personalities, their way of thinking, reasoning, their way of looking at the world. Sensory Deprivation is mechanism of torture that no person should have to go through.

Sensory Deprivation Tank:

Synesthesia

1. Synesthesia
Synesthesia is a condition where the stimulation of a senation awakes another one.

2. grapheme-color synesthesia
Known as color synesthesia, where a person associates a number or letter with a color.

3. ordinal-linguistic personification
Form if synesthesia where sequences or ordered months, days, numbers, or letters are associated with personalities.

4. number-form synesthesia
Number-form synesthesia occurs when the person suffering from it thinks of numbers. It forma mental map of numbers involuntarily and automatically.

5. sound-color synesthesia
In this type of synesthesia, when the person hears a certain sound they automatically think of a certain color in reaction to the first stimulus. It is sometimes described as "fireworks".

6. lexical-gustatory synesthesia
This is the rarest type of synesthesia, where  a specific word awakes a taste in the gustatory glands.

Mental Abilities: Genius, Savant, and Autism

  1. Explain in detail what "savant syndrome" means.
Savant Syndrome is a condition in which a person has prodigious intellectual gifts in a specific area. These can vary from music, to art, to mathematics, and mechanical abilities. Individuals suffering from Savant Syndrome have expertise in a certain, while they extremely lack social skills and abilities beyond their area of expertise.

2. What does genius mean?  Explain the difference between genius and savant.
A genius can be defined as a person with extreme intellectual capability beyond the ones of the majority of people. Geniuses apply skills in all areas, ranging from simply knowledge all the way to creativity. The difference between genius and savant is basically that geniuses do not lack social skills, while savants do.

3. What is a stroke and how could it affect your mental functioning?
A stroke occurs when blood supply is not reaching the brain, causing cells to die. This may happen through the blockage of an artery or the rupture of an artery.  Since strokes cause cells in the brain to die, this could affect mental functioning in a negative way. This could affect a persons thinking and reasoning skills as well as their performance skills.

4. What is a functional MRI and how does it help us understand brain activity?
A functional magnetic resonance imaging is a specialized MRI that measures hemodynamic response in the brain or spinal cord. This machine aids in the understanding of brain activity, for it measures the blood flow in the brain, or where more activity is happening in the brain when a certain function is being done.

5. What is the corpus callosum and what role does it play in your brain's activity?
The corpus callosum is the arched bridge of nervous tissue underneath the cortex the brain. It connects the right and left hemispheres of the brain, allowing communication between them to occur.

Accidental Genius

Can accidents only kill our brains or actually make us better inn some areas? Well, through the video “Accidental Genius” we observe how a genius can be created when coming from an accident. They follow the life of a man, that had an extremely fatal accident, but after his recovery he discovered he was an artist. Not just an artist, but a really good one, and art overwhelmed his life; it absorbed every moment of it. He could not think of anything else that was not art. With all this desire he put it into practice and made beautiful abstract art. Before his accident, he could not draw at all, but after his accident, evidently he became a genius when it came to art. They also follow the life of a man that is a genius when it comes to numbers. He is known as a savant, for he is a genius but lacks in social skills. As a kid, he had autism and epilepsy that caused him to have a lot of seizures. It is believed that the damage he suffered through the seizures caused him to become a genius. Through all these videos we can see how in the world, anyone can become a genius.

Make Me a Genius

Can a genius be made, or can they only be born? In the video “Make Me a Genius” we observed a woman named Susan, who was a complete genius when it came to playing chess. Everything in her world revolved around chess. She tells her story of when she was a little girl and her father introduced her to the game of chess. Her father was a psychologist and was testing if geniuses could really be made. He made Susan practice daily and taught her everything from the game as he could. They tested Susan by making her do a copy of a game onto another board. She got every piece right, but when making her do a game that did not make any sense, she could not get it right. She obviously understood the game in every field. Through so much learning put into practice, it is obvious, that her father’s hypothesis was proven to be correct; geniuses can be made. Susan became one of the world’s best known chess players. Through constant practice and study geniuses can be made in the areas people desire.
